Work on your weakness

Whatever your weakness is, work on them first then apply it and sooner you’ll find that it’s really worth. This is probably one of the most undisciplined guitarist problems. Once they found their comfort zone they always use them over and over again. They always play their favorite passage and they never developed something new technique that will add to their style.

Quality practice

Make it a habit that every time you pickup your guitar, be sure to work first on your weakness and try to improve something. For example, if you have difficulties in shifting between chords then work on it. Try to shift chords from E A string to A D string using power chords with perfect timing. It should be played all over the fretboard. Then try to alternate it let say from A D to E A string and play it forward and backward. Think of every possibility where in you can shift between chords including the farthest chords as possible. Just work on it dude!

Maybe you have some difficulties with the movements between your pinkie and ring finger. Create an exercise all over the fretboard that will train those weak fingers and try to build strength that makes them comfortable and effortlessly movable on the entire fretboard.

Exercises

I have included exercises here which I learned from John Petrucci. A great dexterity exercises for your pinkie and ring finger. Starting at the 5th fret, pick the first note only then followed by hammer on and pull off the remaining notes. After you master this position try to shift into another position of the fretboard. Don’t limit yourself into this you can try every possibility let say, play it descending and ascending manner without stopping. If you feel you can increase your speed then go on.
